OpenAI: GPT-6 enters the public chat, Codex and Work keep September
The October system card says GPT-6 is launching for everyone in ChatGPT, on free and paid plans. It replaces GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna in that window. Codex and ChatGPT Work stay on the September versions. The text still goes to OpenAI.

Key points
Two cuts, not one GPT-6. The public window changes. Codex and Work do not. We did not open the chat.
What changed
The system card, read on 8 October 2026, says OpenAI is launching GPT-6 for everyone in ChatGPT, on free and paid plans, globally. These models replace GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna in ChatGPT. The OpenAI news list dates a page titled GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone to 7 October. That page returned a Cloudflare challenge. We do not take interface details from it.
The same card splits October and September. October is the cut published for the chat. September is what remains in Codex and in ChatGPT Work, for GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. GPT-6.1 Sol is a different note: this card does not say it enters the public chat.
OpenAI treats this October release as High capability in Cybersecurity and in Biological and Chemical. It does not reach the High threshold in AI Self-Improvement. The safeguards named are the ones already described for GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna. We do not repeat the score tables.
What leaves
A model in the free window is not a model at your place. A question sent to ChatGPT goes to OpenAI, as does a question sent to Codex or Work.
Staying on the September cut in Codex or Work does not bring the text back to the machine. It only says this is not the October version.
What we did not check
We did not open ChatGPT, Codex or Work, and we did not call the API. “For everyone” is the card’s sentence, not a screen we saw. The blog page cited by the card returned 403, a Cloudflare challenge. We do not describe Intelligent UI.
The choice
If you use the public window, the announced model is no longer GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna. Reread the picker before treating a reply as the old cut. The text still goes to OpenAI.
If you are on Codex or ChatGPT Work, the card says you stay on September for Sol and Luna. That is not the October cut, and it is not GPT-6.1 Sol.
