NordPass: commercial vault, passkeys and recovery

NordPass password manager: encrypted vault, passkeys and a generator. What the documentation describes, and what it does not replace.

Before you get started

What to expect

NordPass is a commercial password manager. Its features page describes an XChaCha20-encrypted vault, passkeys, a generator and a built-in authenticator. The vault does not choose your master password, or how you recover access if you lose it.

A vault is not a guarantee for every account

You open NordPass because the passwords have piled up: bank, email, tax, shops. The vault can store them and suggest new ones. It does not make an account safe if the service itself was breached, or if you stay signed in on a shared device.

The features page also describes sharing, password policies and an admin panel for teams. Those matter when several people need the same credentials. For personal use, start with the vault, the generator and recovery of the NordPass account.

What the documentation highlights

NordPass describes a vault encrypted with XChaCha20 for passwords, passkeys and other items. Passkeys can be stored and used for passwordless sign-in when the destination site accepts them. A built-in authenticator can keep TOTP codes next to the logins.

Email masking and the generator are separate functions. One limits exposure of your usual address. The other produces a unique password. Neither checks that you can still open the inbox that receives reset links.

Before you move the keyring

Write down where the NordPass recovery code lives, and who could reach it. A synced vault is convenient. It is also a single point: if you lose the way to open it, you lose organised access to many accounts at once.

We did not repeat a product audit for this page, and we do not publish a ranking. Read the current offer, device limits and renewal price on the NordPass site before you pick a plan.

  1. Install NordPass from its official site, then create the account with a master password you can remember without writing it in clear text.
  2. Store the recovery method somewhere other than the main device.
  3. Import a small group of logins, not the whole keyring at once.
  4. Check autofill on two everyday sites, then unlock after the screen locks.
  5. Read the renewal price before you move to a paid plan.
