Pop!_OS: System76’s desktop, and a policy tighter than the slogan

Pop!_OS is System76’s Linux, in the United States, with Ubuntu-compatible software. The product page says zero user data. The policy is more precise: no stored telemetry, but a temporary pass for updates.

Before you get started

What to expect

Pop!_OS fits if you want a desktop run by the manufacturer, including off its own machines. The “zero data” line does not replace the policy, which describes a temporary use of hardware data.

Who it is for

Pop!_OS fits if you want an already shaped Linux desktop, free to download, and Ubuntu-compatible tools. It is also the system on System76 computers. It fits poorly if you want a distribution with no company behind it, or Debian stable’s slow pace.

What you gain

System76 presents disk encryption where only you would hold the key, a desktop you can adjust, and power profiles on its laptops. Ubuntu-compatible software is advertised as usable. “Over one million people” is their figure, not ours.

What you take on

You follow System76’s choices, a Colorado company. A feature highlighted for its laptops, such as power profiles, is not described as universal. The system remains an Ubuntu base: that family’s breakage and repositories still apply.

Privacy

The product page says Pop!_OS collects no user data. The policy is narrower, and that is the page to read. System76 states that it does not collect or store information from installations, and does not transmit telemetry or error reports.

The same policy says a minimal amount of OS and hardware data is used temporarily, and not stored, for updates and a connectivity check. That is not an inspection of the image. Apps you add are not covered by that sentence.

The decision

Choose Pop!_OS if System76’s desktop is enough and the policy, not the slogan, is acceptable. Look elsewhere if you want a base whose documented collection is a package you install yourself, as on Debian.
