AliasVault: passwords and email aliases
AliasVault presents an end-to-end encrypted vault for passwords, passkeys and email aliases. Each site can get a separate identity.
Before you get started
What to expect
AliasVault describes an end-to-end encrypted manager that creates, for each site, a password and an alias address. The site also announces passkeys and access from a computer, phone or tablet. An alias is useful only if you can still read the messages that arrive there.
One address per site, if you can still read it
AliasVault’s idea is not to give the same address everywhere. An alias per service limits linking and list leaks. It is useless if the reset message arrives in an inbox you no longer check.
The site talks about alternative identities, passwords and addresses. Before you create ten, create one, sign up for a worthless account, and check that the message arrives and that you can reply if the service requires it.
Encrypted vault, several devices
AliasVault states end-to-end encryption, generation and storage of passwords and passkeys, and access from several kinds of devices. The code is published on GitHub. The page also offers a free vault. Read what that offer includes when you open it: the word free does not describe the alias or device limit.
A passkey stored in the vault depends on the autofill the app offers and the site accepts. Test it on a trial account before an important one.
An alias does not hide what you type next
A different address does not hide your name if you type it, or your payment, or the device. It reduces one linking channel. It does not make browsing anonymous.
We did not measure alias delivery. A message that lands in spam is a practical failure, even if the vault encryption is sound.
