Spectre: a password computed on the page

Spectre computes a password on the page from your name, a secret and the domain. The site says that information never leaves the page.

Before you get started

What to expect

Spectre is not a synced vault. The official site presents a local calculation: name, Spectre secret and domain produce a password, and that information does not leave the trial page. The project says it rejects storing passwords in an app or a cloud. Availability on other platforms was still announced as coming.

No database to steal, and no database to open

Spectre starts from a clear idea: a password that is not stored cannot be lost in a vault breach, seized, or left on a USB key. It is computed again. If you forget the secret, or you do not type exactly the same name, the result changes and the old access is stored nowhere.

The trial page says the fields never leave the page. That is a property of this demonstration. An app installed later has to be read on its own. Do not transfer the web page’s promise to a binary you do not have yet.

The page exists; other platforms were announced

When read on 2 October 2026, the site showed the calculation in the browser and marked other platforms as coming. Do not build your only keyring on a promise of availability. Check the app you actually mean to use, on the device you actually have.

The project explains that it does not want a manager that keeps passwords. If you already have a vault, Spectre is not an import. It is another model. Mixing the two without noting which one opens which site creates lockouts.

The domain is part of the calculation

A domain change, or a mistake in the name you give Spectre, produces another password. Write down the exact domain form you use. That is not a display detail.

As with any stateless calculation, a site that rejects the generated password forces a variant. Write that variant down. Otherwise the next visit will compute the rejected password again.
