Arch Linux: you assemble the system, and the AUR is not a store
Arch is a lightweight rolling distribution you assemble. The wiki is the manual. On 12 June 2026, the project warned of a high volume of malicious packages in the AUR.
Before you get started
What to expect
Arch fits if you want few decisions made for you. It does not fit if you want a ready desktop on the first evening. The AUR is a repository of strangers, not a reviewed shopfront.
Who it is for
Arch fits if you can install a system, read a wiki, and step in after an update. It fits poorly if you want the computer usable before you have chosen the desktop, the network and the bootloader.
What you gain
You get a light base, official packages for x86-64, and a separate community repository, the AUR. Nothing is imposed as an office suite or as an account. The wiki and the forums are the documented support.
What you take on
Simple, in Arch’s sense, means few additions, not easy. An update can need a manual step, as the project wrote for TPM2 unlocking in September 2026. You are the maintenance.
Privacy
The pages read do not describe telemetry from the Arch project. That is not a silent computer: the browser and the packages you add call whoever they call.
The AUR is the sensitive point. On 12 June 2026, Arch announced a high volume of malicious adoptions and updates in that repository, and asked for caution while it was being cleaned up. An AUR package does not get the review of the official packages.
The decision
Choose Arch if assembling and keeping the system is the project. Take an already assembled base if the first goal is the desktop. Enable the AUR only for a package you have read.
