Bazzite: a gaming image, not a general Fedora

Bazzite is an image for playing games, with Steam and Lutris, in the Universal Blue family. The docs provide a rollback that keeps your files. They do not describe Bazzite telemetry.

Before you get started

What to expect

Bazzite fits if gaming is the reason, including on a handheld. It is not Fedora’s desktop installed and then rebuilt package by package.

Who it is for

Bazzite fits if you want to run games on a PC, a living-room box or a handheld, including the Steam Deck. It fits poorly if you want a server, or a system you change by adding packages the way you would on Debian.

What you gain

The docs ship Steam and Lutris, and name other launchers you can add. Updates provide a return to the previous deployment, or to an image from the last 90 days, without losing personal files. The project compares itself with Fedora Atomic and sits in Universal Blue.

What you take on

The system is an image. The docs advise against layering packages with rpm-ostree: a package added that way can block an update until it is removed. Games with anti-cheat are not all advertised as compatible. The docs point to third-party sites for that.

Privacy

The pages read do not describe a telemetry program of Bazzite’s own. That is not an inspection of the image. Steam, a launcher and a game account send their own data. The repository file, which would say whether Fedora’s count is enabled, was not read.

The decision

Choose Bazzite to play without assembling the system. Take Fedora Workstation if the general desktop is the question, not the controller.
