KeePassDX: a KeePass file on Android

KeePassDX opens an encrypted KeePass file on Android, with no required connection. The file and its backup stay on your side.

Before you get started

What to expect

KeePassDX is an open-source Android app for a local KeePass file. The site says no Internet connection is required, and that the database stays in an encrypted file. Autofill, passkeys and OTP codes are announced. Copying the file is not done for you.

The phone is not a cloud

KeePassDX fits if you already have a KeePass file, or if you will create one and copy it yourself. The app does not open an online account for you. If the phone is lost and the file exists nowhere else, the entries go with it.

The site stresses a single access point: you choose where the file is stored and backed up. A folder synced by another app can carry the encrypted file. It does not decrypt it. Still test opening the copy.

Autofill and passkeys, within the system’s limits

The homepage announces a generator, autofill, a keyboard, passkeys, OTP codes and attachments. Those functions also depend on Android and on the sites. A passkey stored in the file is useful only if the app and the site can use it together.

The code is open, with no ads or tracking announced. That does not replace reading the Android permissions at install time.

Same file, different app on the computer

To read the same vault on a computer, use a compatible app, for example KeePassXC. Do not assume display settings or custom icons behave the same everywhere. Check the fields that matter: username, password, address.

SecuFocus did not walk through your banking apps. After install, unlock a test database, then one real entry, before you move the whole set.
