PikaOS: gaming, on Debian’s unstable branch
PikaOS is a gaming distribution based on Debian sid, the unstable branch. The wiki advertises drivers, a tuned kernel and optimized packages. It does not describe telemetry.
Before you get started
What to expect
PikaOS fits if gaming is the reason and you accept sid. Fresher drivers are the advertised gain. Possible breakage is the cost of that base.
Who it is for
PikaOS fits if you want a Linux already set up for gaming, with drivers advertised as included. It fits poorly if you want Debian stable, or a desktop whose packages do not move between updates.
What you gain
The wiki describes a Debian sid base, picked and rebuilt packages, a tuned kernel, and O3, LTO and AVX2 optimizations. The code is on a Gitea forge. The speed gain is their claim.
What you take on
Sid is Debian’s unstable branch. A recent package can break the next one. The project says it aims at stability anyway. We did not read a support calendar, and we did not inspect an image.
Privacy
The wiki we read does not describe a telemetry program. That is not proof of silence. Steam and game launchers have their own accounts and calls. So do sid packages you add.
The decision
Choose PikaOS only if gaming justifies sid. For a computer you do not want to watch after every update, Debian stable is the other end of the same family.
